I have lots of hard drives in my system and it wanted me to install on everyone. I dont think that was a good idea because of how my system is setup. I picked the NVME that had the boot parti on it but when I rebooted I got "Grub error symbol grub_disk_native_sectors not found" So installed it on the boot didnt work and now I'm unsure how to move forward and get MX linux to boot for me. If I am unable to do so I will lose lots of data cause I'm new and wont know to to recover it. So please help me out to get MX back up and running! Let me know what I need to post but this is what I got. I have 4 nvme 1tb but only one is for the MX install the other are for raid. I'm not sure if that was the reason for MX not booting but there was alot of update to install but like I said I would love some help to get it back up and running The newer bunch of GRUB packages require to get the boot GRUB loader "injected"/"installed" into the "MBR" of the boot drive. Legacy/bios booting will load partially the first sector of the disk - the MBR = Master Boot Record - followed by loading GRUB's core.img, which mostly is located on a couple of sectors before the partition table starts. And as BIOS-booting can only boot from the MBR, you would re-"installing" grub into the MBR of the BIOS boot drive. If you are unsure what drive is actually the drive BIOS is booting from, they offered you to select all drives.

E.g if you first drive /dev/sda would be the boot drive setup within the BIOS to boot from, you would just need only to select /dev/sda as the MBR-location for the GRUB install target.

Now, as you can't boot, try to boot with help from the MX LiveUSB: There are different ways to fix it.

The simples may be this: Boot into the installed system using MX Live USB Rescue Menu: On the MX Live USB boot menu, select switch to GRUB -> Boot Rescue -> (Search for) -> GRUB menus. After booted into the installed system. Open terminal and at command line run:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc Now select the one boot drive ( or if unsure all potential boot drives) Do not select any partition.

An alternative way to fix: Boot into the MX LiveUSB: Within menu /mx-tools open MX Boot Repair. run both steps shown on the first window: * reinstall grub : select boot-drive fro GRUB MBR target and select system partition for "/"-root filesystem MX Linux is installed on. * re-configure/re-generate grub-menu.

A further alternative way to fix GRUB:

* Boot into MX LiveUSB: Within the menu search/select "Chroot Rescue Scan" Select the found MX Linux system and at the chroot-prompt enter

Code: Select all

dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc Now again select the one boot drive ( or if unsure all potential boot drives) Do not select any partition. When done, enter exit (type exit and press enter) leave the chroot-selection menu and reboot without the LiveUSB.
